What is an Emulsifier, and Why is it Used?
Itâs always baffled me why people are drawn to making natural productsâwhether itâs skincare, food, or household essentialsâyet still opt for synthetic or less-than-ideal ingredients. If youâre choosing natural, isnât it because you value purity, minimal processing, and avoiding unnecessary chemicals?
I remember years ago, I came across a recipe that sounded absolutely deliciousâ100% organic ingredients, carefully selected for their health benefits. And then, the cooking method? Put it in the microwave. Seriously?! Why go to all that effort to source organic ingredients, only to zap them and destroy the very nutrients and goodness you were aiming for? It just didnât make sense to me.
The same applies to skincare. Once you start learning about formulation, you quickly realize the need for emulsifiers, preservatives, and stabilizers to create safe, effective products. But hereâs the thingâmany conventional formulations rely on synthetic versions of these ingredients. And again, I have to ask: why?
Why I Choose Natural Emulsifiers
I make natural skincare because I genuinely care about what goes on my skin. Our skin is already bombarded daily with environmental toxins - why would I add to that by using petroleum-based products? Take something like Vicks Vaporub -a common household staple. What if I told you that slathering that on your skin is no different from sticking your finger inside a petrol pump nozzle and wiping it on your chest? Sounds extreme, but thatâs the reality of petroleum-based skincare. I make my own version of vapor rub without any of the nasties -because I believe we deserve better. And that brings me back to emulsifiers. (See how easily I get sidetracked? My passion for clean, natural skincare is real! đ¤Śđźââď¸đ)
What is an Emulsifier, and Why Do We Need It?
An emulsifier is an ingredient that allows oil and water to mix and stay blended. Without it, your lotions and creams would separate into layers -oil floating on top and water sinking to the bottom. Emulsifiers create stable, smooth, and luxurious products that feel good on the skin and actually work.
Why Use an Emulsifier?
⢠Prevents separation â Keeps lotions, creams, and conditioners from splitting into oil and water.
⢠Improves texture â Creates a smooth, creamy consistency.
⢠Enhances application â Ensures the product spreads evenly and absorbs well.
Natural vs. Synthetic Emulsifiers
Not all emulsifiers are created equal. Many mainstream formulas rely on BTMS-50, a synthetic emulsifier that contains quaternary ammonium compounds -not exactly something I want to put on my skin. Thatâs why I choose a 100% natural, biodegradable emulsifier -because for me, itâs a no-brainer.
If weâre making products that are meant to nurture and heal, why not do it the right way from start to finish? Clean ingredients, smart formulations, and no unnecessary chemicals -because our skin (and our health) deserves nothing less.
